RP Ettiquette
Alright, I'm not an expert at Roleplay and I will not say that I am. But I have been at it for a few years so I have a little bit of practice at it. I will make this as easy as possible. First of all, when I start to describe RP, I will be describing Roleplay for LOGT format chat rooms.
Respect others in the room.
- If you do see someone engaged in a roleplay or even a solo, respect dictates that you try to keep the interference to a minimum, whether or not the chat is RP ONLY designated area. If you do feel the need to say something to the person rping, you can either owl them or even make a statement OOC enclosed within brackets.
- Just the same, if a chat is already going in a place when you decide to roleplay, do not think that they need to stop talking for you.
- RP only areas means no excessive amounts of chattering unless having to do with a rp, however a roleplay can be started anywhere. There are no places where rp is not allowed, especially since this is a roleplaying site.
RP Tips
As I said, I am not the Guru of Roleplaying. But here are a few hints to RP well.
- Use emotes. Emotes are essentially your actions. You do this by using the /me command, or typing : or :: .
- Without Emotes: John says,”facepalms.”
- With Emotes: John facepalms.
- Use color codes. Not super necessary, but it helps people find where your speech ends, your actions begin and vice versa.
- Use proper spelling and punctuation. The difference between John loks @ u and John looks at you. is huge. The main reason is because everyone can understand what you are attempting to say.
- Use complete sentences. Incomplete sentences show incomplete thoughts.
- Ex: *Looks at you* <-- Who is you? Who looks at you? Why is someone looking at you?
Complete sentences are complete opposite, and answer all of those questions - Ex: Shen turned his head to see the female approaching.
Who is looking? Shen. Who is he looking at? A female. Why? She is approaching.
- Ex: *Looks at you* <-- Who is you? Who looks at you? Why is someone looking at you?
- Details. Roleplaying is focused very much on writing and your ability to do so. Adding details, help paint a picture in your RP partner's mind. Adding details such as what you are wearing, where you are, what time it is, every bit helps to create this scene. While your profile is there for a reason, people shouldn't have to force your character into anything. Meaning, they shouldn't have to assume your character is wearing the very same outfit in your profile picture.
- Ex: Karaline pulled her cloak tighter around her as she settled back into the same corner of this god forsaken place once again. She had promised herself that last night would be the last night, but the dice hadn't been rolled in her favor that way. She pulled her knees to her chest as the wind seemed to pick up the second that she had settled down. "One more night..." she whispered though she had long lost faith in her own words.
- Godmodding. I mentioned this briefly. Godmodding covers a multitude of things.
- Your character is not all powerful. Even Voldemort had a flaw. Many, actually. Which makes him likable. Harry, the hero, also had a flaw. Dumbledore had a flaw. Its frankly boring if you try and create a perfect character.
- You cannot control my character unless I give you permission. If we are roleplaying and I throw a punch, you have no control over my fist. You can try and move from out of the way of my fist, but you cannot say that "His fist stopped midair and began to beat his own face in." You control your character and I control mine. If I give you permission, then it's fine. You attempt an imperio, and I fall under it, permission granted.
- Try and have fun. Coming to a new site can be intimidating. However we don't all bite. If you have a question, send a message to someone you see in chat. Actually read the FAQ. Yes, it is a pain that you have to do the quiz before getting into chat, but there are really useful things in there. Things that you have questions about.
